(This song depicts an immigrant taking 50 years to get his green card and another 10 years to become a citizen. It took Rafael Cruz 10 years after his son graduated from Harvard Law School, (in 2005) 6 years after his son was Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice, and two years after his son became Solicitor General of Texas, representing Texas before the U.S. Supreme Court! Plus as a Cuban he didn’t have to worry about being deported. Yet, though he was able to work legally almost as soon as he came here, citizenship took him 48 years, despite those advantages, and even the political pressures, we should presume,  from his immigrant-bashing son.)

How is it possible that the children of immigrants, and immigrants themselves, could demand that millions more suffer what they or their immediate families suffered? And yet these national leaders of immigration restriction are “guilty” under the laws they want imposed on others. How can anyone be THAT hard-hearted?

¿Cómo es posible que los hijos de los inmigrantes, y los propios inmigrantes, puedan exigir que millones más sufren lo que ellos o sus familias cercanos sufrieron? Y sin embargo, estos líderes nacionales de restricción de inmigración son “culpables” bajo las leyes que quieren imponer a otros. ¿Cómo puede alguien ser tan corazón endurecida?

The Bible describes hearts so hard that people couldn’t believe it. In Luke 20, after Jesus told of the execution of heartless criminals for murdering the son of their employer in order to take over his business, the people said “God forbid”. (KJV) the God’s Word translation says “That’s unthinkable.” The Book translates “They would never do that.” John Wesley commented: “God forbid that we should be guilty of such a crime as your parable seems to charge us with, namely, rejecting and killing the heir. Our Saviour answers, [vs. 17-19] But yet will ye do it, as is prophesied of you.”

If so many religious leaders were so willing to kill God when God let them, we should not be so surprised that so many Christians today close their hearts to the world’s refugees despite warnings such as Matthew 25:41, 43, 46. Still, it remains incomprehensible that the leaders of shutting out peaceful immigrants are not only immigrants or the children of immigrants themselves – an irony God notes in Leviticus 19:33-34 – but are Christians. And yet those who killed God were the world’s experts and preservers of God’s Written Word.

    I now see why you claim Ann Coulter lies. She is counting illegal immigrants and you count them as documented immigrants.

    Yes, I am one of those, “Get in line like everyone else” people..
    My father waited in that line. It’s not fair to those who have waited in line.

      I don’t remember writing about Coulter for a long time, so you must be talking about what other writers on this blog have said. I have kind of a hazy memory of why I decided to stop reading her stuff, the last time I did, several years ago. Back then, she was a lot more mean than she was funny. I wonder if she has softened since then?

      I am interested in what your father thought of that line. Some people suffer from it a lot more than others. Simon Conway, a talk show host here in Des Moines, talks like you do, and adds to that, eloquence about some of the absurdities of the line; like not being checked for health – a reason for excluding immigrants – until he had been here a few years. He is eloquent about the profound unfairness of stupid, costly obstacles. And yet he, too, wants everyone else to have to go through what he did, just to be “fair”!

      When Moses struggled to lead the Israelites out of Egypt, I wonder if the older folks objected that letting the young folks go, and not have to endure another 40 years of cruel slavery, would be “unfair” to the older folks who had to suffer all that? That seems to be the argument today; an argument so counterintuitive to anything I can imagine, yet so entrenched, that it must be part of human nature. So Moses must have had to deal with it too.

      My thought, but it’s just me, would be to end the suffering for everybody! Have a system that makes sense, that intelligently separates those who want to come kill us from those who want to come work hard for us, with applications that fit on a postcard instead of filling over a thousand pages that only full time immigration lawyers can half way remember. I would have thought that anyone who has suffered even a fraction of what most immigrants face, would be so horrified by the injustice of it that they would work the rest of their lives to end it for everybody! But that’s just me and a couple of others, it appears. Unfortunately.

      Especially with the consensus of economists that it is their OWN economic throats that citizens are slitting, by voting to keep these restrictions and quotas in place. Apparently older citizens want younger citizens to suffer a suppressed economy from driving out hard workers, for as many decades as the older citizens suffered.

      Back to your father: what was his experience like? Was it as easy as Simon Conway’s? Conway came from England! He didn’t have to learn a new language. He didn’t have the obstacles laid before the poor. He wasn’t desperate to escape drug violence. Most of all, he didn’t come from a country which has several times more applicants than the scant quotas allowed for it. He didn’t worry about being killed just trying to get here. Yet he wants millions of immigrants to suffer a lot more than he did, to make it “fair” to himself for having to suffer a little!

      Was your father’s situation anything like Simon’s? Was he allowed to come legally? If he came from Central America, was he one of the rich ones who could afford to stand in line for several days in a business suit, and assure immigration officials he had several thousand dollars in the bank and a nice home there?

      One of the backdrops for my song quotes Fox commentator John Stossel reporting that according to Forbes, the average wait time for a Mexican with a high school diploma is 130 years. Which is a way of saying that for 80% of Mexican high school graduates, there is zero “line” for them any time during their lifetime. If they are in danger, the only way they can live safely is to come here in violation of our unconstitutional laws.

      I marvel at the patience of immigrants, to still want to come here, and to maintain a lower crime rate than citizens, despite our irrational mistreatment of them.
